In Japan, the school year starts in April. Summer vacation is generally from late July to the end of August. But it's only a partial vacation—most students have lots of homework due when school starts in September. The school term that starts in September is called (にがっき) ("second term"), and the kick-off ceremony is called (しぎょうしき) ("start-classes ceremony").
