Kanji study is an essential part of Japanese schoolwork starting with the first grade. By the time a Japanese student has entered junior high school (7th grade), he/she has studied about 1,000 kanji. The kanji studied in the first six years are called kyōiku kanji (教育漢字), or literally "education kanji."
